Privacy and confidentiality
What I hold, why I hold it, and the narrow circumstances in which confidentiality can be broken.
Confidentiality
What you say in a session stays between us. I do not tell your GP, your employer, your insurer or your family anything about our work without your explicit agreement.
There are three narrow exceptions, and they are the same for any therapist working lawfully in the UK:
- A serious and immediate risk to your life, or to someone else's.
- A risk of harm to a child or a vulnerable adult.
- A court order, or specific legal obligations relating to terrorism or money laundering.
If one of these ever applies, I will tell you what I have to do and, wherever it is safe to, do it with you rather than behind you.
I discuss my work in regular clinical supervision, which is a professional requirement. Clients are not identified by name in supervision, and my supervisor is bound by the same confidentiality.
What I hold
How long I keep it
Records are kept securely for as long as my professional body and insurer require, and then destroyed — paper notes shredded, digital files deleted.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you can ask to see what I hold about you, ask for corrections, ask for deletion where there is no overriding legal reason to keep it, and complain to the Information Commissioner's Office if you are unhappy with how I have handled your data. Write to purecbt@gmail.com and I will respond within one month.
